The Paleo. The Zone. The Gluten-free. Another day, another diet. We’re caught in a never-ending merry-go-round of weight loss plans, fueled by celebrity endorsers,

REVIEW

I think that the first thing I should say is that I am not a nutritionist or a dietician, maybe only for myself. But I have studied biology and chemistry as major in my high school (and passed several important exams - please, consider the differences between different national systems of education). Besides that, the weight was…is a “healthy preoccupation” in our family… and a beauty one. I said all these only for you to know the angle from which I will treat the information given by Mrs. Lisa Tillinger Johansen: I’m not a novice, but neither an expert in the matter.

I could say that the book is parted in two main parts, both important and useful.

The first part has the role to open the eyes of those stu… naïve persons in rush for the fast and fabulous effects of a diet or of those even more naïve that will start a diet only because of some commercial and/or of the declaration of a celebrity.

The author takes every diet known on the “market” and (with much more diplomacy I can offer or “those” people earned) shows their bads and goods, if the case may be, aspects. In plus, Mrs. Lisa Tillinger Johansen stresses the effects of these diets for the ones with medical problems.
So many diets!! So many absurdities!

The information is presented in a very accessible way, for everybody to understand. The explanations are in enough doses to be useful, but not to bore or to angst the reader.

In the second part, we received author’s own recommendations. What is most important is that she doesn’t only present the rules of what a person should eat in order to lose weight, but also she offers guidance regarding the eating habits and how to change them for the better.

We get some organized information as different formulas of calculation, tables of elements, but also examples that applied the notions previously presented. All these are good to kept in mind when you hear about one new and fabulous diet and you want to try it.

I cannot say that I agree with all of the author’s opinions, but also I can recognize that she offers many pertinent and good information and advices. If you want to keep a successful, healthy diet (and a life style) you should try to discover the traps of the media and diet industry.

To be clear, I do not accept any kind of bullying inclusive the one based on weight, but also I do not agree that only the inside beauty is the one that matter. So, be healthy and beautiful and if you need help, you could read Stop the Diet, I Want To Get Off.

Life isn’t so bad for succubus, Kenna Blake. True, she seems to be the only succubus with a conscience and a specific strategy for finding her male meals, but she has a cute new apartment, a budding graphic design business, and the most unique friends she’s ever had.

REVIEW

The Succubus Kiss series has already 4 books (including the prequel that is FREE now) and when reading Seduce I could tell that you need to read all the volumes, in order, to have the full story. OK, maybe we will have to deal with some cliffhanger endings, but at least we have already 3 books plus the prequel.

Coming back to the first volume, in Seduce we meet the characters, start to know the set and to have some idea about how the supernaturals live. And they live a very ordinary life. Yes, they have to obey some specific rules, they have some special feeding requirements, but in the end, their preoccupations are very mundane. As human as I am, it was a bit odd to see that there are no such big differences between us. :))

The characters are attractive. Kenna Blake is not as black as her name, but she is one of the last pure-hearted succubi in the world. Even if she is that kind of demon, she is capable of feeling emotions and, apparently, of falling in love. The author contoured a “dualism” of her nature that allows a possible love triangle. Until now, Randal, the focus of Kenna’s attention and the vampire that served as inspiration next to my ancestor for the Dracula character, is all that a vampire is in the view of the modern, romantic literature. From the way I saw it, his most important features are to come in the next volumes and profound sentiments are expected. The author opened the door to many possibilities... or to other characters.

The secondary characters are nice too. Sage, the vampire, has several layers and between her jealousy and friendship there is large room to play. Dex... let’s say that, for the first time, if J.S. would have allowed it, I would have been in the werewolf team, not in the one pro vampire. But even if the situation is clear here (at least for the moment) I would like to meet him more in the next books.

The pacing could be considered to be a bit slow, but even so, the story kept my interest to find out what happens next. The humour brought by Dex and the verbal exchange between the characters peppers the atmosphere. In the second part of the book the rhythm increases and later the triggering event happens.

Another thing that I liked in this first volume is the language. Even if the author doesn’t use figures of speech all the time, her style is pleasant, cursive and there are parts that I really liked. Such part determined me to start reading Seduce.

Overall, the series looks promising, new characters are to meet and some of them could be important, and there is a vast number of possibilities of what could happen. I will definitely check out the next volumes!

REVIEW

All’s well that ends well... At least that was supposed to be for some of our characters, but especially for our whole society of the 21st century ... I mean 19th ... 21st!

It is normal to expect complications when the time travel is possible and the time machines are not well guarded, especially when the one who puts his mind to do the journey has everything it takes to succeed.

Interesting, and in my opinion quite hard to do it, is to create a thread of the story that will not drag, but draw attention, make you curious when all the characters appear to be the good guys. Mrs. Burkhart succeeded such a plot because if everything seems to proceed as planned by our characters (and their plans and interests do not always support one another) there will still be tension, uncertainty, even despair, and climaxes. Some of them, because Mrs. Burkhart, generous as she is, will offer one for each character, plus one for all of them together. And the characters deserve that! I have enjoyed each one of them. Somewhat alike (I have already said that all of persons seem to be good and understanding) they have their own individuality that will influence the course of their history... world history…

So, where the "drama" coming from, from where comes the tension, the possible failure or danger? What could be worse or as bad as changing the history, as our century time travel theorists warn us to be possible? And so, it is the time to talk about the romantic side of the story. Love stories, past or present, or present but which bloomed in the past, possible and impossible given the conditions, the morals and... the time will entwine with the interests of Alice and Edmund. But will they entwine enough to influence their decisions and good intentions? And how long is the road to Hell, and what form will the hell take? (I can think of only one scene that, if it was somehow more veiled, more Victorian, it wouldn't have lost any of its significance and it would have allowed me to give the book to my daughter.)

Regarding the historical past and the contemporary world build by the author, they are the ones you know and not so much. Steampunk elements, not many, but also some that seem to be of a magical sort will be peppered here and there, where they will be needed as explanation, way of doing, or atmosphere.

And because it is a time travel back in the Victorian age, I must mention how the author put together the  mores of the two eras. She skillfully plays on the line dividing the proper from improper. Even if there are one or two broken rules, one with possible disastrous effects according to the old society, our characters provide us a pleasant picture of the way they adapt and hmmm… control their actions.

But let's not forget that this is just the first volume of The Windsor Diaries, so something must go wrong. What will that be, you will see for yourself if you read The Victorian Scoundrel. I liked it.
