What if the one time you didn't want love was when you truly needed it?

Forced to flee her abusive ex, alone with no support, Elle is determined to rebuild her life and protect her five-year-old son. Not one to take the easy road, she opens a bookshop café, but opening day almost ends in disaster. In the midst of this chaos, the last thing she needs is a man as charming as George Jones getting in her way.

George has always been a sucker for a damsel in distress, and Elle ticks all the boxes. But Elle's not interested in being rescued by anyone, especially not him. She knows her taste in men can't be trusted, but fighting George's charisma is harder than she expected. And George, who is not one to ignore an itch, has found there's something about Elle that's got under his skin.

When Elle's ex turns up to cause trouble, George must overcome his boyish flirtatiousness if he's to convince Elle to trust herself and let him into her life. But can Elle put her past behind her before it overwhelms her present?

EXCERPT

This excerpt is after Elle has run into her ex and George is worried about her. Elle is fighting her attraction for him because she doesn’t trust her taste in men.

George didn’t comment and didn’t move. She’d reached out to him for the first time. Her hand was soft and warm. It was delicate – but it was strong. He covered her hand with his own, caressed it. He wanted her to know he was there for her, that he wasn’t a threat, that he would never treat her the way Dean had treated her.

Her lips parted, but she didn’t pull away.

He took her hand in his, rubbed her palm with his thumb. “You’re a strong woman.”

“I don’t feel like it.” Her voice was a little breathless and she was watching him warily, uncertain.

“You’ve raised a great kid in such difficult circumstances. I’d say that’s strong.” He let go of her hand and shuffled a little closer. She didn’t back away. “If you need help, I’m here for you.”

Elle stood then, scowling. She stalked away and then turned back to him. “Why? I don’t understand why you would possibly want to help me. I’m a mess. What’s in it for you?” She put her hands on her hips.

George raised his eyebrows, but stayed seated and replied, “I want to get to know you better. You’re a beautiful, intriguing woman.”

Elle screwed up her nose. “But I’ve told you I’m not interested. I don’t want a relationship; I don’t want a fling.”

“And yet I just can’t keep away.” He realized how ridiculous it must sound to her. “How about we agree to be friends?”

“Friends?”

“Yes, friends. You know, people who hang out together, go to the movies, call each other to chat about their day? Friends.”

The last thing sixteen-year-old Emily Slovkowski wants is to move away from her home at the Jersey shore, gorgeous surfer boyfriend Zach, and her entire identity. But that’s kind of how Witness Protection works, and Em must prepare herself for an epic do-over as she starts a new life in the Midwest.

Even as she pines for sandy beaches and the night life of the shore, the newly-named Ember O’Malley finds herself making new friends, taking photos for the high school newspaper, and thinking an awful lot about the paper’s editor, an oddly cute cowboy named Charles.

When Em stumbles upon a shady beneath-the-bleachers exchange between one of the school’s football coaches and a student, she refuses to get involved. The last thing she needs is to be witness to another crime or call attention to herself. Besides, she finally has some real friends – well, real except for the fact that they don’t know a single thing about her – and she prefers to keep it that way until the trial.

But as her day in court approaches, Em begins piecing together what she saw that day beneath the bleachers. And, as her own past secrets start to catch up with her, Em needs to figure out who she really is – Em or Em.

EXCERPT

Charles scrambled up a steep set of stairs leading to a loft.

Ember hesitated. Was she crazy to follow him up there? After all, she didn’t know him that well. What if under that sweet geek-boy exterior he was no different from Jimmy and Brad and their teammates? She hadn’t seen another soul when they’d pulled in. Perhaps she was a lamb being led to slaughter.

Charles peered over the edge of the loft. “You coming? You’re going to love this.”
“What is it? Can you bring it down?”

“It’s a surprise. And no.” Charles’s forehead creased, and he nodded toward the stairs. “You’re not afraid of heights, are you?”

“No.” Ember took a deep breath and climbed up. She stopped near the top of the staircase and peered around. The loft was empty except for a few scattered piles of hay. Charles sat in the far corner, a huge grin on his face. Her stomach clenched. He’d said he could “cheer her up.” Was this what he had in mind—a literal roll in the hay? Was that how he thought of her?

Ember gripped the railing so hard her palms hurt. It was as though she had a blinking neon sign hanging over her head. “I’m Easy!” She’d thought she could leave the hot tub, the video, and her whole miserable sophomore year behind her, but maybe she couldn’t. Not even halfway across the country. Not even with new hair, a new wardrobe, a new name. Maybe she was and always would be the Girl in the GIF, Emily Slutkowski.

“What is this place?” I asked as Vince shook the umbrella outside and set it open just inside the door.

“It’s my hunting cabin.”

“How fitting.” I slipped out of my rain boots. Vince watched me from the center of the room as I placed my boots near the door. I stood up straight, facing him, facing this.

“I just lost power.” He was still watching me as if I might disappear. “Luckily, I had some candles.”

I nodded, again surveying the stark décor.

“Meredith—”

I took two long steps and interrupted him with my hands on his stomach. The fabric of his T-shirt was thin, and damp from the rain. His chest heaved as his hot breath swept across my face. Everything about him was warm and inviting. I rested my forehead on his chest and let the scent that was distinctly his flow through me. It took me back to the school bus to Philadelphia. To where I first inhaled the perfect mix of mahogany and strength.

“Meredith,” he started again, and I wished he wouldn’t. I raised my lips to his neck and inhaled again. I wouldn’t let myself think. He hadn’t shaved, and I let his beard scrape against the side of my face, anything to touch him. I didn’t want to consider this, I wanted to feel it. “This can be whatever we want it to be. It doesn’t have to be an affair. It doesn’t have to be what everyone else has done before us. We’re not them.”

His argument against typical did nothing to sway me to our union’s merits, but the expression on his face, his determination to make this work, moved me.

“Tell me what you want.” His voice was gentle near my ear, and I wanted to stay in this cabin, in the storm, forever.

“I don’t know what I want anymore.” The tension rose in my chest. All the schooling, all the money, and I didn’t know what I wanted. How was that possible? I could have anything, but I couldn’t name one thing. “Since I stopped working, I’m lost.” I lowered my eyes to his chest. I was ashamed.

“No, you’re not.” His arms wrapped around my shoulder, his hands moved my hair away from my neck, and he leaned down, letting his lips rest there. I shivered before a heat spread through me. “I found you,” he said, and tilted my face to his. Vince kissed me without waiting for an answer.

He kissed me, right there in the middle of the room, until a heat sank down my spine, anchoring me to the ground in front of him, assuring me against every reasonable argument that this was going to be okay.

One year. That’s how long it’s been since childhood sweethearts Sully Graham and Cadence Gilbertson broke up, since one adoption and one out-of-state move turned their worlds upside down.

Suddenly, Cadence is back in New York City, but something’s different about her. The light in her eyes, the music in her laughter, the warmth in her smile—all of those things have entirely vanished. In their place stand the makings of a girl Sully can’t even begin to recognize, much less understand.

Still, despite the collective history of heartbreak between them, he’s convinced he can win her trust again, and he’s committed to proving the invincibility of their love no matter what it takes.

But Cadence is quietly harboring secrets of her own. Dark secrets. Ugly secrets. Secrets that could break a person. And though broken herself and unbearably lonely, she’s determined to protect Sully from her terrible, biting truths. Even if it means locking him out of her life forever.

The only problem is it seems her heart hasn’t quite received the memo. One glimpse of him is all it takes for her to trip into familiar (and, she’ll admit, addictive) feelings that threaten to all but consume her. Now her biggest fear is that her secrets will begin to slowly unravel one by one…long before Sully’s resolve ever does.

The Secrets We Kept is a moving story about first love, friendship, and forgiveness, and the enduring bonds that forever connect us and give us our strength.
