About the author:
I have been writing since I was a kid when I wrote short stories for my mom and gave them to her as gifts. She loved it. Then I wrote my first novel length story in 2009 and have been going strong since then.

So I love coffee (usually the cold kind), I love books (usually the hot kind). If I’m not writing (which I do a lot of) and I’m not spending time with my family, you can find me with a book or my Kindle. I still prefer print and buy my favorites even when I already have them digitally but I do use my Kindle relentlessly.

September 2013 was the month things got real. I signed my very first book deal with Swoon Romance that I am totally hand flapping and nerdy dancing over.

Welcome to Soulless. We are the generation that laughs at death. Reincarnation; what was once considered a gift of immortality has become an eternity of nightmares.

Nadia Richards lives in a world plagued by reincarnation, a system of recycling souls where all past memories, personalities and traumatic events are relived daily in disjointed sequences. Trapped within their own warped realities, not even the richest and most powerful are saved from their own minds unraveling. Madness is the new human nature, and civilizations are crumpling beneath themselves trying to outrun it.

Within a society that ignores death, Nadia appears to be the one exception to the reincarnation trap. Born without any reincarnated memories and with printless eyes, the hot tempered 19 year old quickly becomes the ultimate prize to all those wishing to end the vicious cycle, or for some, to ensure they could evade death forever.

EXCERPT

The world had turned to waste; immortality was never meant for man and it drove humanity to the edge of destruction. There had been plenty of stories about how the human race would end. Unlike the movies from Hollywood, there was no big bang like a sun exploding; there was no catastrophic moment where our world was flipped upside down like in a nuclear war or zombie virus outbreak. It was gradual, like a seeping virus that withered everything within its path until it ground us down into brittle, hollowed cores. It wasn’t out to destroy our bodies; it destroyed everything we once treasured. Hope, love, compassion, joy… even our mortality. It was all gone. And now it mocked us with a peace we could never achieve, death.

GUEST POST
Exploring Modern Alien Mythology: H.A.L.F.

When writing fantasy and sci fi stories, writers often tap into the great and glorious world of time-honored mythology to anchor their books in the fantastic. I accessed this ancient well of story fodder in my first series, The Akasha Chronicles, steeped in Celtic mythology and lore. It was great fun to research ancient myths and legends and explore how they still speak to us in our modern world.

But when I set out to write a new science fiction series (H.A.L.F.), I decided to focus on modern myth, legend and lore by focusing on alien mythology and the government conspiracies related to it. When writing H.A.L.F., I assumed that the myths surrounding the Roswell crash event were all true. What if a flying saucer in fact crashed in the desert on a ranch near Roswell in 1947? What if the military did, in fact, recover not only crash debris but also alien bodies?

It’s against this “mythical” backdrop that H.A.L.F.: The Deep Beneath is set. I chose not to create wholly new myth, but to add my own spin to some of the now nearly universally known stories of alien encounters.

I’ve been fascinated with all things mythical, paranormal and supernatural since childhood. I read every book in my school’s small library in the “Supernatural” section. I think I read A Wrinkle in Time two or three times.

It’s no surprise that as an adult I’m intrigued by alien mythology (and my own sighting of the “Phoenix Lights” in 1997 fueled this further). As I read books on the UFO phenomenon, MUFON newsletters, toured the Roswell museum, and watched every documentary I could find about ET’s and UFOs, the more fascinated I became with the idea that a new mythology has developed over the past seventy years or so. Aliens have become our new “gods”. The idea that we were created not by a divine being or merely by the process of natural selection, but that we exist due to ancient aliens meddling with the gene pool on Earth has grown from fringe thinking to reality for many people. This thinking has been popularized and perpetuated by writers such as Erich von Däniken (Chariots of the Gods), Zecharia Sitchin (The 12th Planet and other books), and by the show “Ancient Aliens” on the history channel.

Keeping with the idea that aliens have become our new “gods”, ETs almost always have “supernatural” powers of some kind. The idea that a being from out there – from the heavens – will descend to our plane, possess powers beyond our own and become a savior is a popular theme of legend and myth. The continued popularity of characters such as Superman and Thor (both aliens) attest to the idea that humans look to “out there” to help us solve our problems. We can’t seem to get enough of these humanoid characters that are relatable yet better than we are. They’re smarter, stronger, and have abilities we can only dream of. Perhaps these characters fulfill our wishes, dreams and desire to be bigger and better than ourselves. Or maybe it’s our fear of the dangers that plague our world – from natural disasters to war and terrorism – that fuels our unquenchable need for superheroes to descend from the heavens and help us out of this mess.

I had all of this in mind when writing The Deep Beneath. The story centers on a human main character, Erika Holt, and a human-alien hybrid character, H.A.L.F. 9 (aka Tex). In the first draft, Tex was a bit cute. He was more a mix of E.T. and Paul than like the murderous aliens in “Independence Day”. But as I got deeper into the project, I realized that a “cute” alien-human didn’t work. He was, after all, created (in my fictional world) to be a weapon. He’d been intentionally deprived of normal social interactions with humans and his education and access to information limited to what his creators deemed relevant. He needed to be more dangerous and less cute.

While reworking the character, I endowed Tex with telekinesis. It seemed a logical ability for him to have as he has far greater intelligence than a typical human (and a trait often linked to the greys which is where Tex’s alien DNA comes from). Tex has access to regions of his brain that most humans aren’t even aware they have. Tex has some other abilities but I’ll leave those as a surprise for the reader!

But I think the overarching reason that I write –and read – science fiction is to examine, through “alien” eyes, what it means to be human. Through alien characters, we can look at ourselves. Maybe this is what makes them so much fun to read, watch – and to write.

About the authors:
Alexandra Ivy - Like most writers, I was born with an avid love for reading. Growing up in a small town in the Midwest, I can’t remember a time when I didn’t have a book in my hand or wasn’t dreaming up wild stories in my head. And when I stepped into my local library for the first time I thought it was paradise. There were so many books on the shelves I didn’t know where to start!

Still, I didn’t plan to grow up and become a writer. I was much more interested in a glorious career as an actress on Broadway.

I followed my dream by acquiring a degree in theatre and performing for several years in summer-stock productions, but after I married my college sweetheart I decided to put the career on hold while we started a family. After the arrival of my two sons, Chance and Alex, I found myself seeking a new creative outlet and decided to turn my occasional scribblings into a genuine effort to get published.

I’d like to say that I was an overnight success, but the truth is that it took years before I finally got ‘the call’. The rejections were painful, but now I’m relieved. All those manuscripts that I thought were the next Great American Novel are now exactly where they belong…gathering dust under my bed.

They did, however, help me learn my craft, and just as importantly, they gave me the opportunity to enjoy writing in a wide variety of genres as I searched for my voice. Which no doubt explains why I started writing traditional regencies under the name Debbie Raleigh and then moved to steamy historicals under the name Deborah Raleigh before transforming into a contemporary paranormal writer as Alexandra Ivy. Now my career spans everything from erotica to romantic suspense.

When I’m not writing I love to travel, it doesn’t matter where I’m going as long as it doesn’t include any cooking or cleaning. I also love to spend time with my family who continue to be my greatest source of inspiration. And since some things never change…when I have a few minutes, you can still find me with a book in my hand!

Rebecca Zanetti wrote her first story when she was six – a romance between a princess and neighboring prince. The princess fell out of her castle and the prince rescued her. A happily ever after was had by all.

This theme of romance has been carried through Rebecca’s works until present time. While today’s heroine may have a medical degree, black belt in Karate and her own 401K, she’s still after that happy ending. And today’s prince may have fangs and wear a black hat, but hey, a modern princess likes a guy who bites.

Rebecca attended Pepperdine University, earning a bachelor’s degree in Journalism with a Political Science emphasis. While there she worked as the Editor-in-Chief of The Graphic newspaper, a member of the Pi Phi Sorority and an intern for President Reagan, who still gave 3-5 speeches a week, even though he was no longer president.

After college, Rebecca worked as an art curator and a Senate aide before heading to law school, where she received her Juris Doctorate from the University of Idaho. She married Tony Zanetti in the middle of her second year of law school and became pregnant with their first child during the third year. She graduated law school, gave birth three weeks later, and took the Bar Exam three weeks after that. All she remembers about the bar exam is that it was so quiet in the testing room, she thought about taking a quick nap. But she continued on, passed the bar and became a lawyer. She worked for a large firm, then a small firm, then the county while also teaching legal classes at her local community college. Now she writes romances about vampires, cowboys, and soldiers.

Growing up amid the glorious backdrops and winter wonderlands of the Pacific Northwest has given Rebecca fantastic scenery and adventures to weave into her stories. She resides there with her husband, children and extended family who inspire her every day. Rebecca has completed several manuscripts, winning award throughout the writing industry for her work. She is currently writes the Dark Protector series for Kensington Publishing, the Maverick Montana series for Entangled Publishing, and the Sin Brothers series for Grand Central Publishing.

While Geneva and her friends embark on a dangerous mission to fulfill her destiny, the dark forces that seek her powers are closing in, putting everyone she cares about at risk.

Description:

Can you live a life of lies?

That’s exactly what Geneva finds herself doing to protect everyone she loves. While Geneva and her friends embark on a dangerous mission to fulfill her destiny, the dark forces that seek her powers are closing in, putting everyone she cares about at risk. Geneva must lie about who she is, what she knows and her true feelings. Are all these lies worth it or will she go too far and lose everything she’s been fighting for?

MB' INTERVIEW

1. Interesting choice for the order of the titles: Truth, Secrets, Lies – usually they are in reverse order. How did you build the series and there will be a next volume?
Lol, very true. But it’s so fitting of me because I feel like I do everything a bit backwards. It works well with the series as well because they become the themes that my main character is dealing with and basically the driving force of her existence. In the first book, she really was seeking her true identity (since she was orphaned by a disaster). Then in the second book, when she finds out the truth, it reveals secrets that she never expected. I love that idea because in life sometimes we are driven to find out the meaning of things or the root of a problem and we don’t look past that. Sometimes the truth can rock your world and that’s exactly what happens to my main character. Then in the third book, Lies, she’s trying to decide how to deal with the fall out of all this knowledge. Who can she trust with it, who must she lie to in order to protect them from who she really is. And yes! I’m working on book four now, which will be the final in the series. It will deal with big decisions as the main character tries to fulfil her destiny .

2. Geneva – being for Europe, the name has special connotations for me. What is the significance of heroine’s name and what were the other options?
There were no other options for me. The first words I typed were “My name is Geneva Sommers.” I said, “Well, that’s settled, I guess the voice in my head has a name!” ha-ha. I do like to think that all names have a deeper meaning though. I research them a lot before assigning them to my characters and want them to be well rounded, (ie their personality and features and magic powers all link to their names.) Names are an important theme in my series. Most of the characters don’t even have names in the first book. They’re numbers, so I play with what it’s like to be a nameless being in society and how that can create loss of identity. Geneva is the chosen one, and that is referred to as the Eva in my books, so it’s taken from part of her name.

3. What are the difficulties when you put together elements of magic, SF and dystopia?
Oh wow good question. Magic is really fun to write, because in most instances it can explain away anything and get you out of any corner you may write your characters into. But the problems arise because magic isn’t standard. Every series approaches it differently, so you need to set up hard rules for your magic and stick to them. Remembering them all through a long series can be tricky.

4. Can we live a life of lies? What Geneva could teach us – without spoiler, please?
Sure. It’s really about what can you sacrifice for the ones you love? Even though my books are fantasy, the characters deal with real life problems. We all tell little white lies to protect people we care about. Geneva just happens to have some major secrets that she needs to keep hidden from the dark forces closing in on her. The best way she can find to do so it so lie to everyone. But telling a lie is one thing. Living it is a whole different story.

5. What do you think today’s YA literature lacks and what are the reasons?
Sometimes I think authors forget to tap into that nostalgic time of adolescence. That’s what readers relate to and what makes them identify and love certain characters. That was a vivid time in my life and I have fun reliving those memories with my characters.

6. Tell us about Pass It On organization. What it is, why did you associate with them and what they do? What can we do?
Yes! I actually co-founded Pass It On with my husband. Giving back has always been really important to us. We love reading and want to share it with as many people as possible. The idea started simply as “pass on the book after you’ve read it.” Why let it sit on a shelf to collect dust? We also thought the idea of a book traveling from reader to reader was pretty fantastic. That creates it’s own life or story! For 2015 I took Pass It On to another level by creating a One-for-One campaign to attach to it. It’s like Tom’s shoes, but for books. With the One-for-One, I match the sale of every paperback I sell through my website or at an event. The goal is to donate 1000 books to schools, libraries and literacy programs in need. So far I have over 300 books to donate. I’ve also set up a few book drive donation sites where people can donate new or gently used children’s and YA books. They’ll all be donated at the end of the year along with the 1000 books I’ve matched to the list I’ve been compiling through the year. You can help by purchasing a book from my site or if you know of a program, school or library in need of these types of books email me so I can add them to my list.

”GRIPPING AND UNFORGETTABLE.” - Romantic Times (4 ½ star review) on The Companion

EXCERPT

Stephan flung Miss Austen’s novel to the floor. Not that it was not entertaining. It was, even skilled and insightful. But the book he wanted to read was laid out before him in a coma, unreadable. He thrust his hands in his pockets and slumped in his chair.

Her situation irked him, to say the least. What awaited her if she wakened from her coma? She had no parents living, else her uncle would not be her trustee. Now her guardian lay downstairs with a weak heart and a tenuous grip on life. What would happen when even this one person who cared for her was denied her? Van Helsing would return tomorrow. He could keep Van Helsing out of her room, for a while. But if she recovered? With a lout like that in the house, was she safe? And then there was the fact that she was suspected, however stupidly, of murder. Stephan chewed his lips.

Only his sharp hearing would have detected the low moan. His eyes widened in shock. Her eyelids fluttered. He dove from his chair to his knees beside her bed and began to chafe her hand. She moaned a little louder. She was waking! Thank whatever gods you choose, he commanded himself. He would not be spared damnation, but at least his crime against her, whatever it was, might not be irrevocable. She was about to come to consciousness.

He jerked his hands away from hers. She would not like to wake to being touched. A stranger by her side? Not reassuring. Especially one whom she had last seen covered in blood and whirling darkness. But there was no one else. And he could not let her wake alone.

He mustered what he hoped was a reassuring smile.
